Liverpool are keen on Lewis Cook, so should Everton reignite their 2016 interest in the Bournemouth midfielder?

According to a report from The Sun over the weekend, Liverpool are interested in pursuing a £20 million move for Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook as Jurgen Klopp looks for possible replacements for Emre Can should the German leave Anfield this summer.

Cook has been touted as a potential star of the future ever since he burst onto the scene at former club Leeds as a 17-year-old academy graduate. But it has arguably been over the last year that he has really shown that he is more than capable of living up to that expectation.

The midfielder captained England’s under-20 side to World Cup glory last summer and has featured fairly regularly at the heart of the Cherries’ midfield – and The Sun is now suggesting that the Reds are keeping a keen eye on his progress.

But it is not the first time that he has been on the radar of a Merseyside club.

Back in March 2016, The Sun reported that Everton were monitoring Cook before his move to the Vitality Stadium. And perhaps with the Toffees’ midfield not exactly covering itself in glory this season, the club should consider going back in for Cook and rivalling the Reds for his signature.

Given where Everton want to go, Sam Allardyce should not be able to say that any of the club’s central or holding midfielders have been impressive over the course of the season. And while Cook is not the finished article, he is the kind of exciting talent that should be on the Toffees’ radar once again.

Cook is a battler in the middle of the park, but he is also more than capable of driving forward with the ball at his feet and dancing through tight situations – and he should only get better. And having been interested before, Everton should not allow Liverpool to pursue his signature unchallenged this summer.
