Everton should be prioritising signing a new defender during the summer, so perhaps a fresh move for a former target should be on the radar.

According to a report from The Sun, Arsenal are considering making a bid for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani in the summer as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his centre-back options.

It is no surprise that the Gunners are keen to sign a new defender given their struggles at the back this term, but they should not be the only Premier League team taking a serious look at the 23-year-old if he is available.

Everton have similarly been disappointing at the back this term. No team in the top-half of the table boasts a worse defensive record this season than Sam Allardyce’s men, and with Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka starting to reach the latter stages of their careers, signing some defenders in the summer surely has to be a priority.

The Toffees have previously tried to sign Rugani. Calciomercato reported in 2016 that Everton offered the Old Lady around £26.4 million for the Italian, and they should look to make a major statement this summer by trying to lure him to Goodison Park once again this year.

Rugani has not exactly been a first-choice in Turin, with just 12 Serie A appearances under his belt this term, so Everton should try their luck in the hope that Juve are open to the idea of selling the youngster.

Ahead of this season, Everton were talked about as the kind of team that will not only be looking to strengthen their grip on a top seven place but will also want to put serious pressure on the top six. While that has not exactly gone to plan, adding a player like Rugani to their defensive ranks in the summer may be a great way for the Toffees to start getting their planned ascent back on track.
