A year-and-a-half after he arrived at Goodison Park after a protracted transfer saga, how can we judge Everton’s £45 million man Gylfi Sigurdsson?

The Icelandic international has certainly been better in his second season on Merseyside, showing flashes of the quality that made him one of the Premier League’s most exciting midfielders at Swansea City, but consistency remains elusive.

For every match winning display or wonderful goal, think that glorious long-range curler against Leicester, there are a series of displays that can best be described as anonymous.

So with just three months left in the season, should The Toffees be scouring the market for a potential upgrade? There is certainly options out there and reports from Corrieo de Manha stating that Sporting Lisbon will be forced to sell their influential captain Bruno Fernandes should not go unnoticed.

The Portuguese international, who is reportedly a target for Liverpool according to The Mirror, has also been heavily linked with Everton in recent times. A Bola reported in January that The Toffees were keen, particularly as Sporting could be willing to sell for £35 million – well below his £90 million price-tag.

Fernandes is a similar player to Sigurdsson but his remarkable productivity sets him apart. He has scored 22 goals this season while adding another 11 assists for the Primeira Liga giants.

And with Fernandes set to bid farewell to the Estadio Jose Alvalade, you wouldn’t blame Everton if they reignited their interest. However, that could push Sigurdsson out of the starting XI.
