Gylfi Sigurdsson to Everton deal could collapse so should the Toffees just pay Swansea £50m and boost their top six chances?

It looks as if the Gylfi Sigurdsson transfer saga is going to rumble on for a little longer as talks between Everton and Swansea City break down, reports Sky Sports.

This does not mean the deal is off, however, but both Premier League clubs are still some way off agreeing what is an acceptable price for the attacking midfielder.

The Toffees have previously had a £40m offer for Sigurdsson rejected by Swansea, who are holding out for £50m for their prized asset.

However, with the Merseyside club not willing to go above £40m there is a fear at Goodison Park that relations have now soured and the proposed transfer could indeed collapse.

The question is, though, should they just pay up the £50m the Swans are looking for? After all, if this window has proven nothing else it is that the transfer market in football is massively inflated.

The £200m Paris Saint-Germain paid Barcelona for Neymar is the tip of the iceberg, but there were also four fees paid in the English top tier this summer over the £50m mark.

Kyle Walker’s move to Manchester City from Tottenham Hotspur will eventually cost £50m after add-ons (BBC), for example, with the 27-year-old defender the same age as Sigurdsson.

The Iceland international would be just as important, if not moreso, to Ronald Koeman’s men as Walker will be for the Citizens, so perhaps the valuation – in the current market – is a fair one.

It has already been a busy summer of business at Everton and fans are rightfully excited as a result, but if they have genuine hopes of breaking into the top six then a new goalscorer and Sigurdsson – a man who has scored 42 Premier League goals and provided 33 assists to date – will be key. So perhaps they should just cough up.
