Should Everton move for the exiled Liverpool man in January?
The Mirror reported on Wednesday night that Mamadou Sakho has accepted the likelyhood that his Liverpool career is all but over.
The 26-year-old has not kicked a ball for the Reds this season after manager Jurgen Klopp outcasted him due to problems he has regarding the Frenchman’s conduct.
His absence is not linked to a lack of talent, however, and Everton would be wise to monitor Sakho’s situation closely.
He did more than enough last season to show that he is a very fine centre-back, and Everton are still in the market for one after failing to sign Lamine Kone in the summer.
It could be said that Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka have done fine this season, given that the Toffees’ have the second best defence in the Premier League, but at a combined age of 66, they are not a long-term solution for manager Ronald Koeman.
Only five points separate both sides, and second-placed Liverpool would be reluctant to strengthen any rival, let alone the fact it’s Everton, but Koeman would test the club’s resolve if he offered the £20 million he reportedly planned to spend on Kone (according to The Mirror).
The Reds would earn a £2 million profit on a player who Klopp has no intention of using, which seems a tidy bit of business, and it gives the German manager a chance to strengthen his defensive options.
It could be complicated, but it could also be as simple as Everton needing a centre-half and Sakho seemingly needing a new club, if the figures are right.
It would be a bold move by those on the blue half of Merseyside, but it would also be a move which illustrates the club’s growing ambition following Farhad Moshiri’s takeover back in February.
