Schalke 04 ace Leon Goretzka is likely to leave the German club in January with his contract set to expire in the summer.

The midfielder has been strongly linked with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Barcelona according to the Metro.

The Premier League appears to be the 22-year-old’s most probable destination but the above clubs shouldn’t be the only ones who lodge a bid.

Everton have made a poor start to the campaign and are likely to spend big again in January.

Signing Goretzka would be another huge statement of intent while the midfielder could bring balance to their team given the fact he can be deployed as a defensive midfielder or a playmaker.

Everton’s midfielders have been very disappointing this season. Idrissa Gueye hasn’t reached the levels he did last term, Morgan Schneiderlin has found himself dropped while Davy Klaassen and Gylfi Sigurdsson have been disappointing signings.

Davy Klaassen hasn’t made an impact since arriving at Everton for £23m from Ajax last summer.

Everton signed three no.10’s in Klaassen, Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney last summer and Goretzka will be able to provide a style of player they don’t already have.

Goretzka is already in the German national team and is one of the brightest prospects in Europe and there’s no question he’d be a massive coup for Everton. They may have to utilise their newfound financial capabilities to bring him to Goodison Park, but they could likely promise the youngster the first team football he wouldn’t necessarily get at some of the other clubs he has been linked to.
