According to a report from well-known Italian football expert Gianluca Di Marzio, West Ham are lining up a summer swoop for Sassuolo defender Gian Marco Ferrari, but Everton should challenge their Premier League rivals for the Italian’s signature.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan with Sampdoria, and really impressed for the Serie A outfit, making 31 appearances in all competitions.

Gian Marco Ferrari (L) and Roberto Gagliardini of Italy depart to London on March 26, 2018 in London, England.

They did not activate their option to buy the centre-back, however, leaving the door open for other clubs to swoop in and secure themselves a bargain.

Everton are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements, with Ashely Williams and Phil Jagielka on the wrong side of 33 and 35-years-old respectively, and Ferrari could be just the man for the job.

Standing at 6ft 2in tall, the Italian is strong in the air, but he isn’t necessarily the fastest of players, although his wonderful ability to read the game more than makes up for his lack of pace.

He plays with a certain type of tenacity that makes him ideally suited to the Premier League, and like all Italians, he defends as if his life is on the line.

New Toffees boss Marco Silva will surely be prioritising the addition of another centre-back this summer, and he could do a lot worse than the Sassuolo centre-back.

According to Transfer Market, Ferrari is valued at £9 million, and in today’s market, that would represent excellent value for Everton.
