Why don’t Everton test Liverpool’s principles with a January bid for linked-away Emre Can?
Everton fans might not like it but Liverpool’s Emre Can embodies the qualities that new manager Sam Allardyce looks for in a midfielder and making an approach for him in January shouldn’t be sniffed at by those on the blue half of Merseyside.
Allardyce, who has previously signed Steven N’Zonzi, Mo Diame and Cheikhou Kouyate, is a big fan of the towering, powerful midfielder who can carry the ball through enemy territory and Can might be an ideal player for Allardyce to continue that trend next month.
The Germany international is out of contract in the summer and an impasse over negotiations means that Liverpool will likely have to sell in January or lose him for free next summer.
Losing a player of Can’s quality on a Bosman isn’t a good look for the Reds on a football level or a business level but, at 23, the former Bayern Munich man surely has a very bright future in the game and selling him is a must – even if Everton are the ones waving the money.
Juventus are seemingly in pole position but the Toffees could and certainly should make a bidding war out of it. They have the money to rival Juve who, according to The Mirror, are hoping to pay only a “small sum” for his services next month.
Allardyce coming in with a big bid would give the Reds a major dilemma and force them to decide whether they want to sell to their bitter neighbours – whom they face on Sunday – or turn down a lot of money on principle.
Liverpool owner John Henry is a sports fan, but he is also a businessman and billionaires don’t tend to amass such wealth by turning down great deals.
Question is, will Everton offer them one?
