Manchester City have reportedly joined the race to sign Aaron Mooy but can Everton utilise Tim Cahill’s influence to land the Huddersfield midfielder?
Interest in Aaron Mooy is hotting up, with ESPN reporting Manchester City are considering activating a £20million buy-back clause to land the Huddersfield Town midfielder.
Everton, Southampton and West Ham United are also interested in signing Mooy, who has impressed at the 2018 World Cup despite his country Australia’s elimination from the tournament without a win.
The 27-year-old only joined the Terriers permanently from City in the summer of 2017 in a £10million deal after a successful season on loan in 2016/17 in which he helped them to promotion to the Premier League.
Part of that transfer allows the reigning English champions to re-sign Mooy for £20million and while Huddersfield do not want to sell their prized asset, they would be powerless to do anything if the fee was met.
Everton’s secret weapon
The emergence of the Citizens as a potential destination for Mooy could be enough to dishearten those others from the division interested in landing the Australian.
However, the Toffees could have one final ace up their sleeve in the shape of Tim Cahill, who is an international teammate of the midfield star and clearly a role model, recently telling Goal:
“His career has been amazing. He is so driven mentally and has so much ability. Someone I’ve always looked up to.”
A large chunk of that career was spent at Goodison Park, with Cahill playing 276 times during eight years on Merseyside and the veteran might be able to help convince Mooy that the blue of Liverpool is better for him than the blue of Manchester.
