Everton have had a shaky start to their Premier League campaign which has left Marco Silva frustrated.

Everton got a much-needed victory against Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup last night. The win should come in as a huge sigh of relief for Marco Silva who was under serious pressure after the disappointing defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Sheffield United at home on Saturday.

The Toffees no doubt dominated the game with 70% possession and 16 shots at goal. However, the Blades’ resilience gave them the important win which led Silva to accuse his players of hiding ahead of a difficult run of games. (Telegraph)

One player who hasn’t looked anything like himself is Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelandic international has so often been Everton’s saviour through his goals and assists but his form has been a serious concern. Sigurdsson is yet to find the net in the league this season and only has one assist to his name.

The recently turned 30-year-old was Everton’s joint top scorer last season along with Richarlison but his form dipped long before the end of the last campaign. Since the end of January this year, Sigurdsson has managed just four goals and four assists in the Premier League.

That is an abysmal return for a player as good as Sigurdsson and his lack of creativity has played a small part in Everton’s problems this season. Silva will now host Manchester City this weekend which would be their toughest test of the season so far.

Everton will need Sigurdsson firing for them to have any chance of getting a result against the champions but with his form and confidence being low, Silva should seriously consider starting someone else in his position. Alex Iwobi played centrally last night while young Tom Davies too deserves a chance after having played just 11 minutes in the league so far this season.

Silva needs to be ruthless at this point of the season where a further dip in results could have an impact on his future as Everton’s boss. With Burnley, West Ham and Brighton coming up after the game against Manchester City, Everton should eye wins in all of those games to have any say in the fight for a place in the top seven.
