Left-back was an issue for the Merseyside outfit throughout the 2017/18 season, with injury to Leighton Baines meaning Cuco Martina was played out of position there for much of the campaign.
Baines will turn 34 in December and there are doubts over whether the veteran should be first choice anymore, so competition is badly needed.
Gibbs has plenty of experience in the division from his time spent at West Brom and at Arsenal before that, but is five years younger than his fellow Englishman and is right in his prime.
