Aaron Lennon’s performance against Everton should come as a warning to Tottenham Hotspur teammate Erik Lamela.

Aaron Lennon has been on the books of Tottenham Hotspur since 2005, but he is not guaranteed a place in the starting line-up.

The 27-year-old winger has made just seven appearances in the Premier League so far this season, just two of them starts.

One of those starts was against Everton at White Hart Lane on Sunday, and perhaps his performance against the Toffees has convinced manager Mauricio Pochettino to give him more chances.

As the stats below show, Lennon was a crucial figure in Spurs’ 2-1 win and deserves to retain his place in the team for tonight’s match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Tottenham teammate Lennon replaced in the line-up on Sunday was Erik Lamela, who has blown hot and cold.

The Argentina international winger has been among the goals in the Europa League and has looked brighter than last season, but he is frustratingly inconsistent and often goes missing in matches.

Lamela was an expensive signing in the summer of 2013, costing a reported £30m, and one suspects that he will be given many more chances to showcase his quality as the season progresses.

However, Lennon’s recent performances against Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League and Everton in the Premier League should come as a warning to Lamela.

The Argentina international needs to step up his game and add consistency to it. Lennon is probably a back-up at this point in time, but if he continues to play the way he did against Everton when given the chance, then Lamela could find himself out of the team.
