Sverrir Ingason suffered relegation with Granada – but he has the raw attributes to be a success at Leeds United.
Even if the Avengers had assembled at the Neuvo Estadio de Los Carmenes, they would have a herculean challenge on their hands saving Granada from relegation last season.
Tony Adams, clad head-to-toe in tweed and incorporating ‘90s disco into his training sessions, may have been ridiculed both at home and abroad for losing each of his seven games during a bizarre spell in charge of the La Liga strugglers. Yet, anyone who has watched the Spanish top flight over the last two years will tell you that relegation was an inevitability for Granada.
Tony Adams never stood a chance
When you concede 82 goals in 38 league fixtures, survival is never a likely possibility. Therefore, Leeds United supporters could be forgiven for being a little concerned as The Sun claims they are trying to sign a player who started 17 times at the heart of one of Europe’s most haphazard defences.
Ice-man
The report states that Sverrir Igason is a target for both Leeds and Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town. The 23-year-old, part of the Iceland team that sent England packing from Euro 2016, has a release clause in his contract allowing him to leave Granada for just £2 million just six months after arriving from Belgian side Lokeren.
However, Ingason’s disastrous half-season stint in La Liga should not make Leeds think twice. After all, it takes more than one inexperienced defender, in his first ever spell in Spanish football, to solidify a backline that has been haemorrhaging goals for fun in the last two seasons.
Ten-time Iceland international Sverrir Ingason
In fact, even when Granada were racking up the defeats, their goal difference swelling by the game, Ingason was one of the few players to emerge with any credit. He stood out in a narrow 1-0 home defeat to Atletico Madrid and Granada even looked ever so slightly more difficult to break down with him in their backline.
Put Ingason in a more stable defensive unit and he could thrive. An all-Scandinavian partnership with Pontus Jansson could get the best out of this old-school, physical centre-back.
