Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly amongst the Premier League sides keen on signing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Morgan Gibbs-White.
Gibbs-White appears to be one of the brightest prospects currently coming through in the Football League, having made a handful of appearances for the Championship pace-setters last season and being a crucial part of the England squad that won the under-17 World Cup this year, with the midfielder scoring in the final.
The teenager’s lack of game-time in the first-team may mean that he is nowhere near being a household name amongst Spurs fans, but perhaps the masterstroke deal to bring Dele Alli in in 2015 should give Tottenham supporters plenty of hope that, if they can sign Gibbs-White, he may prove to a similarly inspired signing.
Alli was clearly too good for League One when Tottenham brought him in. Nevertheless, there would have still been some raised eyebrows when Mauricio Pochettino started using him regularly following the end of his loan spell back at Stadium MK.
However, Alli quickly vindicated Pochettino’s faith and has now become a vital player for Tottenham and England little over two years later.
Gibbs-White is playing at a higher level than Alli was, and of course, the latter had enjoyed a significantly greater amount of first-team football for the Dons before moving – but Spurs are at a level now and have such a promising academy, that they simply do not need to go out and target youngsters from other clubs unless they are convinced that they are the real deal, and the early signs just hint that Gibbs-White could prove to be exactly that.
