The Real Madrid midfielder would be the logical replacement for David Luiz, who is on his way to Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea’s Brazilian midfielder David Luiz will leave for almost £40 million (€50m) for Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Usually it is the Premier League club who splash the cash on new players instead of making money by selling them so if manager Jose Mourinho has let a key midfielder leave, then it means that he is already plotting a move for an alternative.
Sami Khedira of Real Madrid would be the logical replacement for Luiz. The 27-year-old joined the Spanish giants after the 2010 World Cup – just after Mourinho was appointed their coach. Khedira was a regular starter under the Portuguese, who has always been convinced of his skills. Two years ago he said: ‘There is no better player (than Khedira) in the world in his position’.
However, under current Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, Khedira isn’t playing such a key role anymore. One of the reasons is that the Germany international was sidelined with injuries for almost six months in the past season and only started playing again just two weeks ago.
Although Khedira started in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid as the suspended Xabi Alonso’s replacement, Asier Illaramendi has been earmarked as the Spaniard’s long-term replacement. It looks as if Ancelotti will prefer Luka Modric, Alonso and Illaramendi in midfield, while Khedira will be relegated to the bench.
Will Khedira be happy playing the role of a squad player next season even at European champions Madrid? Probably not. Mesut Ozil wasn’t, and he left for Arsenal last summer. The Germany international has probably told his compatriot all about the fascinating atmosphere in English stadiums.
Moreover, if Khedira moves to England, then he could also join the elite list of players who have won domestic titles in three major European leagues, having clinched the Bundesliga with Stuttgart and La Liga with Madrid.
Chelsea definitely have the money to sign Khedira and Madrid could probably do without him. Mourinho and Khedira have a good relationship with each other from their three years together in the Spanish capital, and under the Chelsea boss, the German will have a key role in midfield for the Blues.
It looks as if it would be a win-win situation for everybody, especially when you consider that it isn’t easy at all to find a top-quality player with international experience for as important a position as defensive midfield. Chelsea should at least make a move for Khedira.
