Should Chelsea re-sign Juan Mata from Manchester United?

Jose Mourinho’s imminent appointment at Manchester United raises questions over the future of Juan Mata – the player he deemed not right for Chelsea and sold to the Red Devils.

Mata’s £37 million sale split Chelsea fans, with half upset and the others trusting Mourinho to get it right.

Now the Spaniard faces the prospect of being marginalised at United once again, with Mourinho, when confirmed, likely to bring in his own players.

Mata remains highly admired by Chelsea fans, part of the 2012 Champions League winning squad, and a classy presence on and off the pitch.

It was at the Blues he enjoyed the best spell of his career, with his United form never quite able to match what he showed at Chelsea, making a combined 25 assists in two full seasons in the Premier League alone.

Still just 28-years-old, Mata has a lot more to give and is the type of technical player who could thrive well into his mid-30s.

Mourinho may not want to sell to Chelsea, but that is not to say the Blues should not try to bring him back.

Players like Oscar and Eden Hazard failed to kick on this past year and Mata would add real quality to their attack. New boss Antonio Conte should at least test the waters to see if there is a deal to be done to bring back the club’s former hero.
