Could Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have a bigger budget than Celtic this summer?
If Steven Gerrard wants to be a success at Rangers, he has to stop Celtic from reaching 10 Scottish Premiership titles in a row.
Such a feat would devastate Rangers fans and, with the Hoops boasting eight on the bounce now, Gerrard will know that the responsibility falls on him to prevent their Old Firm enemies from making history by 2021.
And bizarrely, could the Gers’ best course of action here actually be to sell two of their best players?
Alfredo Morelos is being linked to Newcastle United and James Tavernier is being linked to Aston Villa [The Daily Mail]. Between them, they could get close to around £30 million, with Morelos, a 30-goal striker, reportedly worth £20 million on his own [Don Balon].
Tavernier is a right-back, but he is English, coming into the prime of his career and he has a knack for scoring or creating goals, so £10 million really might not be out of the question.
Both are good players, but £30 million is one hell of a warchest and one that would definitely worry Celtic.
Tavernier and Morelos cost the Gers around £1.2 million combined, which should illustrate that such players can be found for peanuts, and Gerrard would still have a lot left over to improve other areas of the squad.
The Ibrox side aren’t a million miles from Celtic, but they aren’t that close to them either, evident by the nine-point gap which separated both teams last season.
Let’s face it: Tavernier and Morelos won’t be finishing their careers in Glasgow. They’re becoming too big for Ibrox, so why not sell when their valuation is at an all-time high?
