Celtic should challenge for West Bromwich Albion’s Kieran Gibbs.
In addition to Moussa Dembele, it’s no secret that Celtic might also struggle to keep Kieran Tierney at Parkhead this summer.
The 20-year-old is having another brilliant season in Glasgow and has reinforced his reputation as one of the best young left-backs on the continent.
With that in mind, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers would be negligible if he wasn’t already looking at possible replacements and there could be a great one in the Premier League.
Kieran Gibbs has been a rare positive in an otherwise horrendous season for West Bromwich Albion, who are almost certain to be relegated from the top flight.
Fortunately for him, Gibbs, a £7 million signing from Arsenal last summer, will probably never kick a ball in the Championship. He will have plenty of interest from the Premier League but there is no reason why Celtic shouldn’t throw their hats in the ring.
Newcastle United were linked with him prior to his move to West Brom, but the Magpies’ acquisition of Kenedy, coupled with their decision to extend Paul Dummett’s contract, indicates that left-back may not be a position that Rafael Benitez is still prioritising.
Top-flight clubs are bound to be interested again, but Celtic can offer him Champions League football and the promise of trophies, something he might be desperate for. The 28-year-old won three FA Cups in North London, but Nacho Monreal kept him on the bench for the most part.
In an ideal world Tierney won’t be going anywhere, but Rodgers must work on the knowledge that it is not an ideal world and that if a massive club like, say, Manchester United really want Tierney then they’ll get him.
If that scenario materialises then Gibbs simply can’t be baulked at.
