Celtic are tracking Astana attacker Patrick Twumasi – but Junior Kabananga has outscored him this season.
Celtic were five goals up on aggregate when they travelled to Astana for the second leg of their Champions League qualifier back in August.
But, with Patrick Twumasi on fire in Azerbaijan, Brendan Rodgers and co were left biting their nails. Two well-taken goals from the Ghanaian striker at the start of the second half put Astana 4-1 up on the night.
And although Celtic did eventually secure their place in Europe’s premiere club competition with two late goals in Eastern Europe, it appears that Twumasi’s performance has caught the eye of Rodgers.
According to Ghana Sports Online, Celtic are considering making a move for the 23-year-old in the January transfer window. But is it his Astana strike partner that the Scottish champions should be looking at instead?
Outscored and outshone
While Junior Kabananga was outshone by Twumasi in that thrilling clash three months ago, he has outscored the Ghanaian in all competitions this season. In total, the Congolese international has hit 21 goals in 43 games for Astana in the 2017 campaign, helping the club win the league title while finishing second in the Golden Boot race.
A quick and athletic striker, Kabananga is a little older at 28 but is a more natural goalscorer than Twumasi, who often plays in a wider role.
And with The Scotsman reporting that Celtic are unlikely to take up their option to sign PSG loanee Odsonne Edouard, there may soon be room for one more centre-forward in The Hoops’ squad.
