Celtic reportedly wanted Mark Sykes last year, and the midfielder is set to move in January.

The Belfast Telegraph reported last year that Celtic were amongst the sides interested in signing Glenavon midfielder Mark Sykes, with Premier League and Championship clubs also tracking the youngster.

Of course, nothing would come of the interest at the time. And Celtic have not exactly been left to rue the decision with some of their midfielders enjoying some incredible form in recent months.

But as The Scottish Sun is now reporting that Glenavon are expecting to sell the 21-year-old during the January transfer window, perhaps Brendan Rodgers should take another look at Sykes before he moves elsewhere.

Sykes has scored three times in the league this season for the high-flyers. The Scottish Sun reported that Hibernian, Blackburn Rovers and Port Vale are keen on the starlet, but Celtic should consider taking a gamble on him.

He would have a huge task trying to force his way into the team when the likes of Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie have been playing so well, and stalwarts such as Scott Brown are struggling to regain their place.

But he could add further depth to Rodgers’ options and may be the kind of player that could develop into a decent addition in the coming years.

It is unlikely that he will take up too much of Rodgers’ January budget. And if he shows the glimpses of quality that attracted Premier League attention as well as interest from Celtic previously, then the Hoops could perhaps be reflecting upon a real bargain deal in the future.
