Should Celtic take a look at Aston Villa’s Mile Jedinak after missing out on John McGinn?

Celtic fans were left seething earlier this month when Aston Villa pipped them to the signing of John McGinn.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers had multiple bids rejected by Hibernian for the 23-year-old midfielder, before Aston Villa stole a march on the Scottish Premiership champions and paid £2.1 million for him.

The Scotland international has looked brilliant since joining the Championship side and it’s clear that Rodgers missed out on a gem, if it was ever in doubt before.

Logically it would seem that Rodgers is still in the market for a midfielder, having failed to get their man, and should he look at the player who is suffering at Aston Villa as a result of McGinn?

The veteran midfielder has fallen down the pecking order in regards to midfield places since Steve Bruce signed the former Hibs star.

He might have only just turned 34, but Jedinak – a £4 million signing from Crystal Palace two years ago [The Telegraph] – is clearly an excellent midfielder and one who could still be an asset in the Scottish Premiership, even if his influence in the Championship appears to be waning.

If Rodgers’s side reach the Europa League then they’re going to have a lot of games and with Scott Brown also getting no younger, it might be handy for Rodgers to rotate between them. The Northern Irishman has Eboue Kouassi at his disposal but, let’s be honest, he is nowhere near Brown or Jedinak’s calibre at this moment in time.

The 79-cap Australia international would also be reunited with Socceroo team-mates Tom Rogic and Daniel Arzani, should he move to Parkhead.

Jedinak is very much in the twilight of an aging career, unlike McGinn who’s at the beginning of a promising one, but he could be an excellent short-term option for the Celtic boss if he still wants extra steel in his side.
