Sunderland man McGeady has hinted at leaving his current club, so could Celtic move?
Aiden McGeady has hinted that he could leave Sunderland in the near future despite scoring for the League One side on Saturday – and Celtic have got to consider a short-term deal for their former star.
The 32-year-old has overcome injury and a lack of fitness to return to action for Sunderland under Scottish manager Jack Ross, but he told the Evening Chronicle that he will be tempted to leave if he cannot earn regular game time.
Missing for the first seven league games, ex-Bhoy McGeady returned to action for Sunderland in September but has only managed three starts since becoming available – out of a possible eight games.
Instead, he has made four sub appearances and was left on the bench by Ross in a 1-1 draw against Coventry. But after coming off the bench in the 54th minute on Saturday, McGeady scored his first of the season in a 3-0 win over Southend.
A 93-time Ireland international, McGeady joined Sunderland from Everton last summer but has failed to get going at the Stadium of Light – with the club’s relegation hardly helping.
Now, after hinting at an exit, Celtic have got to bring McGeady back to Parkhead for the first time since his exit in 2010 when he joined Spartak Moscow.
A three-time Scottish Premiership winner with the Hoops, McGeady clocked up 185 appearances for Celtic and scored 29 goals as well as creating 47 assists. He is still held in high regard at Parkhead, despite his exit.
Celtic are light on options out wide, with Jonny Hayes seemingly ostracised while Mikey Johnston and Lewis Morgan are still inexperienced. That leaves just James Forrest and Scott Sinclair as main options on the flanks.
Another winger would be crucial to finally replace the loss of Patrick Roberts, and bringing McGeady back to Celtic Park would re-energise the Celtic push for a treble treble.
