Should Celtic rival Newcastle for Nick Pope?

Celtic surely need to update their goalkeeper options in the near future, so perhaps a move for a Premier League stopper should be on their radar.

Heading into the summer transfer window, it seems more than likely that Brendan Rodgers will consider prioritising strengthening Celtic’s goalkeeper options as soon as he is able to buy players again.

The Hoops’ first two options, Craig Gordon and Dorus De Vries are 35 and 37 respectively, and the former had arguably been short of his best form before he sustained his serious injury earlier this year.

And with Scott Bain only on loan, the Bhoys can surely not allow the summer window to pass without adding to their options between the sticks – so perhaps they should consider taking a look at Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.

The Sun recently reported that Newcastle are currently eyeing the 25-year-old who has performed so well for the Clarets since Tom Heaton sustained a shoulder injury earlier in the season having gone into this campaign having never played a Premier League game.

Sean Dyche faces a tricky decision once Heaton returns to full fitness, and The Sun suggests that Pope may be tempted to consider his future if Heaton gets the nod to return as number one.

A move to another Premier League rival may be tempting for the former Charlton Athletic stopper, but Celtic should definitely join the race as there are certainly some selling points that make a move to Parkhead seem very appealing.

Newcastle are currently well-stocked for goalkeepers, so there seems no guarantee that he would enjoy anymore game-time at St James’ Park than he would at Turf Moor if Heaton takes his place.

Celtic arguably need a new number one, so they will be able to offer the prominent role that Pope will be looking for if he decides that he wants to leave. And of course, the chance to play in the Champions League would make a move to the Bhoys difficult to turn down for most.

Dyche may be determined to keep Pope in his ranks and may have absolutely no intention of selling. But if Celtic sense that he may be available, the Hoops should do all they can to tempt him to Glasgow as his form this season suggests that he would be a significant upgrade on Rodgers’ current options.
