Celtic midfielder is only a bit part player. Should he have stayed at Kilmarnock?
Celtic moved to sign Youssouf Mulumbu as a free agent on deadline day, strengthening their midfield.
Mulumbu had kept his options open after a successful season with Kilmarnock.
He was one of Kilmarnock’s best players last season, helping to inspire a win over Celtic.
Killie boss Steve Clarke said in May he did not expect Mulumbu back, because the midfielder was chasing a better offer, STV reported.
He had to wait a while, but the move to Celtic made it seem worth the wait.
Right now, Mulumbu should question whether he made the correct call.
He has barely been used by Celtic, selected in just three games for a combined 155 minutes of action.
Mulumbu’s only league appearance was a 2-1 loss to former side Kilmarnock in September.
He was not even on the bench for Celtic’s cup win at the weekend and did not play a role in the run to the final.
Meanwhile Kilmarnock and Steve Clarke have kicked on from last season.
They are now up to third place, just two points behind leaders Rangers, and one back from Celtic, even though both clubs have a game in hand.
Mulumbu will be getting paid more at Celtic, and has the opportunity to play Europa League football (85 cumulative minutes so far).
But at Kilmarnock he really could have been part of something.
At Celtic he is a bit of an outsider at present, and it would be hollow for him to gloat in the success which he has contributed little to.
