Celtic could arguably do with bolstering their defensive options, so perhaps a move for one of Southampton’s defenders makes sense.
While few Southampton fans were expecting Jan Bednarek to be a first-team regular during his first few months at St Mary’s, they were surely expecting the 21-year-old to make more than one appearance by this stage of the season, especially with Virgil van Dijk beginning the campaign injured and in exile.
However, the centre-back went into this international break with just the one appearance under his belt, and is still awaiting the chance to play in the Premier League following his £5 million move from Lech Poznan in the summer (fee reported by BBC Sport).
The fact that he signed a five-year deal with the Saints certainly suggests that Mauricio Pellegrino will not be writing him off yet in the slightest, but it may be worth considering offering him out in January in the hope that he can secure a loan move that enables him to play more often.
One club the Saints should specifically offer Bednarek to is Celtic given that Brendan Rodgers arguably needs to bolster his options at centre-back in the near future.
Nir Bitton has featured at the heart of the defence more often than Rodgers would have probably liked, but with January a notoriously difficult window to make significant additions to a squad, a short-term fix until the summer may appeal.
Bednarek has, very briefly, represented Poland’s senior side, but has more prominently been seen representing the under-21s, so he is undoubtedly an exciting prospect who would definitely be a decent option for the Hoops to consider in January.
And allowing him to join a side such as Celtic, who have dominated the domestic game in recent years and were the proving ground for the likes of van Dijk and Victor Wanyama previously, may be exactly what Bednarek needs to build his confidence up and prove a point to Pellegrino.
