There will be better goalkeeping options available for Celtic to pursue than Scott Bain this summer.

Scott Bain might only be on loan at Celtic, but he did his chances of a permanent move to Parkhead no harm at all in Sunday’s 3-2 win at Rangers.

The 26-year-old, on loan from Dundee, pulled off a series of fine saves – including a superb one late on from Josh Windass – on what was an unexpected debut, after Dorus de Vries failed a late fitness test to start at Ibrox.

Since then, speculation is rife that Brendan Rodgers wants to sign him on a long-term basis this summer, while Hibernian boss Neil Lennon also admitted his interest on Wednesday.

But should Rodgers bow out of the race and concentrate his efforts on signing a truly top-drawer goalkeeper this summer?

Scott Bain of Celtic is seen during the Rangers v Celtic Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

As good as he was, Bain is untested over the course of a whole Celtic season and it seems silly to suggest that he is the answer to the Bhoys’ goalkeeping problems on the back of one performance.

There are much better goalkeepers out there and even if the Northern Irish manager has to pay a bit more, it would be money well spent if it’s the right one.

Fans of the Parkhead club might argue that Bain should be signed regardless and allowed to compete with a summer signing for the number one shirt, but where does that leave Craig Gordon?

Gordon will have returned to the fold by the end of the season and, with highly-rated Conor Hazard returning from his loan this summer, Rodgers only needs to sign one goalkeeper and it should be an outstanding one.
