The likes of Scott Brown, James Forrest and Stuart Armstrong all have less than 18 months remaining on their current deals, despite their involvement and form in the first team this season.
There is no doubt that the Hoops will want to keep the trio, but questions marks should be raised over whether keeping Dedryck Boyata – who is in the same contract situation – is worth it.
The Belgium international has been largely in and out of form, and when he does finally find a bit of consistency, he suffers an injury. It has been a frustrating campaign for the former Manchester City defender.
The 27-year-old could now have fallen down the pecking order, with Rodgers bringing in Jack Hendry from Dundee and Marvin Compper from RB Leipzig in the January transfer window.
The Daily Star claims Boyata currently earns £14,000 a week in Glasgow, a sizeable wage for a player that has managed just 19 of Celtic’s 27 Scottish Premiership fixtures.
Considering his wage, his proneness to injury and his inconsistent form that has seen him both shine, or completely flop – such as the 4-0 defeat to Hearts – Celtic should avoid offering Boyata an extension.
