Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers chased the 24-year-old all of last summer; should Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers bring him in?
Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that Celtic are closing in on the signing of boyhood Rangers fan Lewis Morgan. If and when a deal materialises, it will be a victory made even sweeter by the fact that Morgan is a lifelong fan of the Ibrox club and the Gers failed to get him.
But the 21-year-old talent will stay with current club St Mirren on loan until the summer.
Ideally, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers needs another winger now, after Jonny Hayes was ruled out for the rest of the season, while Patrick Roberts is missing until March. Should the Northern Irishman inflict a double blow on Old Firm rivals Rangers and sign someone they failed to get last summer: Jamie Walker.
Former Gers boss Pedro Caixinha spent most of the summer trying to sign the Hearts winger – who scored 12 Premiership goals last season, more than Hayes and Roberts – but the Portuguese manager refused to meet the Tynecastle club’s £1 million valuation.
There is no way getting away from the fact that the 24-year-old has failed to hit the heights of last season, having only netted twice in 14 Premiership outings so far, but he is clearly a talented wide player and one who can play on the right and left side of attack.
Even without their injuries, were Hayes and Roberts guaranteed to be at Parkhead next season? Hayes hadn’t pulled up any trees following his £1.3 million summer move, while Roberts almost didn’t re-join the Hoops on loan from Manchester City this past summer.
Celtic are one injury to Scott Sinclair or James Forrest away from a disaster and it makes sense for Rodgers to hedge his bets by adding another winger.
