Mikael Lustig has confirmed his departure from Celtic.

Michael Lustig of Celtic celebrates his second goal during the Betfred Cup Semi-Final at Hampden Park on October 21, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Mikael Lustig has confirmed his departure from Celtic after seven and a half seasons at the club.

Lustig posted a message on his Instagram page saying goodbye and thank you to Celtic fans.

Lustig signed in January 2012, and has played a part in all eight of their consecutive league titles.

Now Celtic have an opportunity to honour Lustig’s contribution if they decide to offer him a testimonial.

Testimonials are nearly always offered to a player after 10 years of service. Celtic should rip up the rule book.

If Lustig felt he could carry on, he undoubtedly would have continued at Celtic.

His player began to decline and he has taken the decision to walk away and not to tarnish his reputation.

In some ways it is a selfless move, for the good of the club, to push them to sign a new right-back rather than take the easy option of renewing his contract.

Lustig may ‘only’ have been at Celtic for seven and a half seasons, but his trophy haul is incredible.

Offering the Swede a testimonial would be a positive move for the club and a fantastic way to pay tribute, and even raise some money for charity at the same time.
