Rangers will make another attempt to sign Jamie Walker from Hearts in January – but they’ve made little progress so far despite their summer signings.
2-0 certainly sounds better than 5-1 but Rangers’ latest Old Firm defeat at the hands of dominant rivals Celtic once again highlighted the huge gulf in class between the two sides.
Goals from Tom Rogic and Leigh Griffiths ensured Brendan Rodgers side cruised home with three points in the bag and, in truth, they should have edged nearer to last season’s 5-1 thumping in an impressive display.
Rangers, who created one clear chance in 90 minutes, have certainly been done a few favours by a flattering scoreline. Therefore, if Jamie Walker was watching on from home, you could forgive the winger for having second thoughts about the prospect of sealing his much-anticipated move to Rangers.
The Gers had two bids rejected for the winger with Hearts holding out for £1 million but, with the Scottish Sun reporting earlier this month that Rangers are lining up a pre-contract agreement in January for a player who will be a free agent come the summer, it appears somewhat inevitable that Walker will end up at Ibrox eventually.
However, although Rangers certainly made a statement in the transfer market by spending big in an attempt to close the gap at the table of the table, they do not appear to be going anywhere fast.
After seven games, they are not only eight points behind Celtic but six behind Aberdeen too. Rangers have won just once at Ibrox and, as it stands, are closer to eighth than they are to second.
Therefore, with Walker attracting interest from Derby County in late 2016 (Derby Telegraph), you wonder whether he would be better off putting all his energies into bettering last season’s goal tally of 15 and hoping that his form attracts the interest of a club in a better state of affairs.
