Trevor Carson impressed against Celtic on Wednesday night.

Brendan Rodgers Celtic's manager celebrates with Dorus de Vries after the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on September 10, 2016 in Glasgow.

It’s very rare that the most impressive player in a Celtic match is one that doesn’t actually play for the Hoops.

But Motherwell goalkeeper Trevor Carson can claim that somewhat prestigious, unofficial award after his heroics in last night’s 1-1 draw at Fir Park.

The 29-year-old was, according to Brendan Rodgers, “outstanding” as he constantly repelled Celtic’s stars with a host of brilliant saves and you wonder whether the Northern Irish manager manager would be tempted to sign him.

After all, he knows him. Rodgers told Herald Scotland today after the draw: “You have to give massive credit to their goalkeeper. I knew Trevor as a young guy and he was outstanding. Then I lost track of him but he made some great saves.”

It’s unclear how the pair’s paths have crossed in the past, but it’s very clear that Carson is a very decent goalkeeper and one who would arguably provide better competition for Craig Gordon than Dorus De Vries, who has made one appearance for the Bhoys since September of last year.

The Dutchman, 36, signed a new contract earlier this month but he, nor 35-year-old Gordon, is a long-term option for the Parkhead side and Carson certainly showcased his abilities on Wednesday.

Of course, it might’ve just been a fluke, the type of one-off performance that every goalkeeper has every now and then, but he and the Steelmen visit Rodgers’s side on the weekend and another good display should definitely make Rodgers ask the question.
