The Celtic boss is a fan of the Swansea City winger – or at least used to be – and Brendan Rodgers should consider re-signing him.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has already signed a winger this month in Lewis Morgan, but the 21-year-old will spend the rest of the season on loan at St Mirren in the Championship.
With Patrick Roberts and Jonny Hayes both injured, Rodgers could do with another wide player before the transfer window closes and could he raid his former club for one?
“Wayne has undoubted talents. He broke onto the scene as a very young player at 17 or 18. I’ve no doubts about his qualities and abilities.
“When he is on the top of his game, he is a player with class.”
At 33, Routledge, valued at around £2.2 million as per Transfermarkt, is probably past his best in the Premier League and the “class” that Rodgers referred to back then is most likely on the wane.
However, the former England Under-21 ace, who has only started three Premier League games this season, has more strings to his bow than strictly pace and as a result he could perhaps have a lot to offer North of the border.
James Forrest and Scott Sinclair – Routledge’s former team-mate in South Wales – are Rodgers’s only wide options at the moment and it would be borderline neglible for the ex-Liverpool boss not to strengthen this area.
The Hoops have a big second half of the campaign, what with their Europa League participation and the start of the Scottish Cup, and Rodgers would be risking Celtic’s progress in both competitions by gambling on Forrest and Sinclair staying fit.
He needs a plan-b option and Routledge is ideal.
