Celtic are reportedly considering a review of their goalkeeper options at the end of the season.
While Celtic look to be well on their way to securing the Scottish Premiership title, have already won the League Cup, remain in the Scottish Cup and finished third in their Champions League group, it could certainly be argued that the Hoops have not quite found the performance levels of last season during this campaign.
Brendan Rodgers’ men are not as dominant as last year, and the Hoops will surely be looking to use the summer to make the kind of changes that will allow them to keep all of their rivals at arm’s distance.
One area that surely needs addressing is the situation surrounding the Bhoys’ goalkeepers. Neither Craig Gordon or Dorus De Vries have looked exactly convincing this term, and the pair boast a combined age of 72 – so making some changes makes sense.
Sky Sports reported at the start of the month that Celtic were planning to review their goalkeeper situation at the end of the season. And if they decide to get a new stopper in, the Bhoys should consider a move for Queens Park Rangers keeper Alex Smithies.
The Daily Mail has recently suggested that the Championship side may not be in a financial position to reject substantial bids for any of their key players in the coming months, and Celtic should test their resolve to keep hold of Smithies.
The 27-year-old – who, the Mail reports, has been a Premier League target in the recent past – is arguably one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the division, so could well be an upgrade on Gordon and De Vries, who have both struggled to keep mistakes out of their game when they have been given a chance this term.
And with the chance to play Champions League football and compete for trophies, it would surely be difficult for Smithies to turn down Celtic if the chance presented itself in the summer.
