Should Celtic consider Everton’s Phil Jagielka as a stop-gap if and when Dedryck Boyata leaves?
It looks increasingly likely that Celtic will need a new centre-back in the very near future.
Dedryck Boyata looks to be on the brink of leaving Parkhead, amid reports that he refused to play in Tuesday night’s defeat at AEK – a result which saw Celtic tumble out of the Champions League before the group stages for the first time under Brendan Rodgers.
As a result, the Belgium international, who impressed at the World Cup in Russia this past summer, is not exactly Mr Popular on the green side of Glasgow at the moment.
But nearly every Hoops fan would acknowledge that he is important enough to merit a top-drawer replacement arriving.
It might be a little late in the window for Rodgers to find a long-term replacement, but should he look at Everton defender Phil Jagielka for the short-term?
The Everton man might be 35, but he has a tonne of experience and despite his advancing years, he has proven his longevity in recent years.
However, he was sent off in the Toffees’ Premier League curtain raiser at Wolves at the weekend and, given Yerry Mina’s arrival, Jagielka’s importance is on the wane at Goodison Park.
He might not be up to par for the Merseysiders, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a fantastic asset for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
Jagielka, who earns £50,000 per week according to Silly Season, is clearly not a long-term option for Rodgers, but signing him on a season-long loan might not be a bad idea by the Northern Irish manager.
