Should Celtic challenge Scottish Premiership rivals Glasgow Rangers for Dominic Solanke before he winds up at Ibrox?
Dominic Solanke to Rangers is a rumour that refuses to go away and he hardly dissuaded a move for his services on Monday by admitting that he is ‘intrigued’ to see how Steven Gerrard gets on at Ibrox.
According to The Scottish Sun, the Liverpool hitman is interested in the prospect of joining Gerrard at Rangers in a loan switch from the Premier League side.
If Solanke does wind up taking the Scottish Premiership by storm then should Celtic regret not renewing an interest in the English attacker?
The 20-year-old, valued at around £26.3 million [Football Observatory, CIES], snubbed Celtic last summer to join the Reds. The Guardian claimed that Brendan Rodgers was interested in him on the basis that Moussa Dembele could leave, which remains the case now, so why not rival the Gers for his signature?
At this moment in time, Rodgers only has Leigh Griffiths and the linked-away Dembele as striking options, though Odsonne Edouard may yet join on a permanent basis.
Playing under Gerrard is clearly a massive pull for any young player, but working with Rodgers at Parkhead must also be a very attractive proposition when you consider what the Hoops have achieved.
Plus, Solanke will have known about Rodgers’s interest last summer, so punting for Rangers ahead of the Bhoys would hardly be a no-brainer. He would surely consider the Northern Irishman if he came calling, but if he doesn’t and Solanke lights up Scottish football then Rodgers only has himself to blame.
