Should Celtic battle Getafe for Everton’s Joel Robles this summer?

According to AS, Getafe want to sign Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles this summer.

The Spanish goalkeeper will leave Goodison Park on a free transfer in a few months and Getafe are looking like front runners to sign the 27-year-old.

Robles, who began his career with the Primera Division side, is reportedly keen on a return, but should Celtic throw their hat in the ring and try to hijack the Liga club’s move?

It’s no secret that Celtic need a new goalkeeper this summer and although fans of the Parkhead side are clamouring for Scott Bain’s loan move to be made permanent, he has only played two games and it’s worth remembering that even Dorus de Vries – who began the 2016-17 season as the Hoops’ number one – can look brilliant in the short term.

Bain, 26, has impressed against Motherwell and Rangers in recent weeks while Craig Gordon continues his recovery from a knee injury, but Robles, who boasts 17 clean sheets in 51 Premier League games for Everton, has the pedigree that manager Brendan Rodgers can’t and shouldn’t ignore.

But would the Toffees stopper snub his boyhood club to join Rodgers? Possibly, given that Celtic could entice him with Champions League football, having never played in the competition, and the Scottish giants would be in a position to match his £20k-a-week wages at Goodison Park.

As far as free transfers go, signing Robles is a no-brainer for the Bhoys and if his arrival means that Rodgers won’t pursue Bain then it’s a gamble well worth taking.
