The on loan winger has made eight league appearances for the Owls, with seven coming from the bench.

After Sheffield Wednesday suffered back-to-back league defeats against Brentford and Leeds United respectively, fans have been wondering whether on loan winger Callum McManaman should be starting more games.

The 25-year-old checked in at Hillsborough on loan during the January transfer window from West Bromwich Albion, but bizarrely has made just one start and seven substitute appearances.

It seems that Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal sees McManaman as more of an impact player, someone to come on when a goal is needed against tired legs, rather than someone who can start matches.

The stats would suggest that Carvalhal has a fair point, as McManaman’s registered two assists from his seven sub appearances, while his sole start against a struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers side at home led to a 0-0 draw.

There is also the possibility that McManaman isn’t yet fit enough to start games, as after missing out on West Brom’s Premier League 25 man squad, the only competitive fixture McManaman has featured in before January was for the Baggies’ U23’s this season – a Football League Trophy tie against Luton Town.

After racking up minutes for Wednesday however, you’d think McManaman’s now in a position where he can start games – and with the club looking to stop a rut, maybe the Owls should try it.
