Jason Denayer’s season at Sunderland has not been a happy one.
The young Belgian was expected to move to Sunderland to gain Premier League experience, ahead of potentially making the breakthrough at Manchester City next term.
However, things have not gone according to plan for the powerful centre-back.
Although Denayer has certainly gained experience while being at Sunderland, but it is hard to imagine that he has enjoyed the move much.
The Black Cats have been abject this term, and Denayer, himself, has not found his top form.
The 21-year-old has been shuffled around the back four by David Moyes, and even played as a midfielder on occasion, as Sunderland have unsuccessfully searched to find the winning formula.
It seems highly unlikely that Denayer’s loan spell will be made into a permanent one when the transfer window re-opens, and that leaves his future up in the air.
It would be big leap of faith from Pep Guardiola to put Denayer straight into City’s team, but he is clearly ready for first-team football.
To gain further experience Denayer could have to leave City again, and a move to Celtic could benefit all parties.
Denayer spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Celtic, and enjoyed the most productive spell of his career to date.
The Belgian international became an integral part of the Celtic side, and impressed alongside Virgil Van Dijk.
With two more years experience under his belt now, Denayer is likely to be an improved player and he would fit in well with Brendan Rodgers’ system.
Comfortable in possession, and able to carry the ball forward from the back, Denayer would have no problems adapting to the passing style which Rodgers demands.
And, given that he still has room to improve, Celtic could be making a very smart move if they attempt to bring Denayer back to Parkhead this summer.
