Leeds United are keen on Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot, but the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are also interested.

According to a recent report from The Independent, Leeds were amongst the host of clubs that were keen on signing Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot – who is expected to make a £1 million Premier League move this summer.

The likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are in the mix for the 18-year-old, according to The Independent, and a top flight move in the summer appears to be on the cards – which would seemingly rule Leeds out.

But if the Whites come back in with an offer that meets the League Two’s asking price, perhaps Wilmot would be wise to consider a move to Elland Road the best option for him over potential switches to Anfield or Tottenham.

Centre-back has been problematic for Leeds this season. The season started incredibly well for the Whites as they established themselves as the early pace-setters in the Championship, and a key reason for their success was their brilliant defensive displays that saw six clean sheets in their first seven league games.

However, the campaign has largely unravelled since then. Pontus Jansson has not recaptured his form from last season but has still been Leeds’ best centre-back. Liam Cooper has improved dramatically but silly mistakes have not disappeared for his game entirely, and Matthew Pennington has proved to be an underwhelming loan signing.

Paul Heckingbottom’s men look set to spend next season in the second tier and will undoubtedly need to bolster their options at the heart of the defence in the summer unless some of the under-23s are promoted before the season concludes and take everyone by surprise with how quickly they adapt.

Meanwhile, Spurs and Liverpool have unquestionably been two of the best out of all of the heavyweights in the Premier League when it comes to giving young players a chance. Nevertheless, Wilmot would surely have a better chance of almost immediate first-team football at Elland Road than he would by joining either of those teams, or any of the others currently monitoring his progress.

Heckingbottom has shown at Barnsley that he can help exciting players reach the next level, and Wilmot should perhaps look at his track record as a reason to join Leeds if their interest turns into a concrete bid this summer rather than head elsewhere.
