Aston Villa are now pushing towards the play-offs after hammering Middlesbrough 3-0 at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon, with Dean Smith really getting his side firing now.

Villa’s run has given fans real hope of a Premier League return, but it may mean that transfer plans for the summer become a little complicated.

Not knowing which division Villa will be in next season means two wish lists may be compiled, and one player on the Championship list may well be Brentford’s Romain Sawyers.

The Daily Mail reported in January that Villa wanted Sawyers for £4million, but were set to delay the move until the summer, when more funds would be made available.

Sawyers, 27, would surely love to work with boss Smith again having played for him at Walsall and Brentford, but would Villa be wise to follow through with the move?

A St Kitts and Nevis international, Sawyers has picked up six assists this season but no goals, representing a creative player who can tee up opportunities for teammates.

Much could depend on Jack Grealish. If Villa’s talisman leaves, then Sawyers would make sense as a replacement in the centre of the park, driving forward to aid the attack alongside another linked-away player in John McGinn.

Grealish and McGinn staying though would make a move for Sawyers redundant, especially when Villa also have Conor Hourihane at Smith’s disposal.

Sawyers would be a fine signing for Villa if they’re in the Championship next season – but promotion may leave Villa looking for better additions, meaning this is a move potentially in flux having looked likely just two months ago.
