According to a report from the Daily Mail back in July, Aston Villa were keen on Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur and had made enquiries for the Scotland international.

Steve Bruce’s men have arguably not suffered too much by missing out on the 30-year-old as they sit in a very encouraging position in the Championship table going into the busy Christmas period.

Nevertheless, the Villans should arguably consider reigniting their interest in McArthur during the January transfer window in the hope that he can help the side capitalise on their current position.

McArthur is currently set to be out of contract at the end of the season, according to Sky Sports. And if the midfielder makes it clear that he has no intention of signing a new deal, Palace may feel that selling him during the January window may be a smart move.

Therefore, Villa – if they decided to make a fresh move – may be able to land McArthur for a bargain fee, and he may add that quality and momentum to help the Villans stay on the right track as the demands of the season stretches the squad.

And if he does manage to help the side get themselves promoted, he would be one of a number of players within the squad who would have the top flight experience to help Bruce’s men re-establish themselves at the highest level.
