Glasgow Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn has been linked with the Ibrox exit recently, so perhaps Aston Villa should register an interest.

The Daily Mail recently suggested that a host of clubs, including Leeds and Nottingham Forest, were interested in signing Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn this summer. And while they were not linked, perhaps it would make some sense for Aston Villa to enter the running.

Waghorn – who is no stranger to Steve Bruce, having worked under him when he was in charge at Sunderland – has enjoyed a promising couple of years at Ibrox, scoring 43 goals in 67 games in all competitions for the Light Blues, so it is not surprising that several sides are considering a pursuit in the summer.

With Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan at the top of the striker pecking order at Villa Park, Villa do not necessarily need a marquee addition to come in this summer, but rather someone who can cope with shouldering some of the goalscoring responsibility while also handling the weight of expectation.

The Villans supporters will surely be expecting their squad to make the promotion charge next season that they never threatened to make this term, and that means any new signings will be under pressure.

But with Waghorn largely coping with the amount of pressure and expectation that there was at Rangers during their year in the second tier last term, he may be the right kind of addition to give Hogan and Kodjia the support they arguably need.

And having failed to really earn a chance under Bruce when he was at the Stadium of Light – he made just three appearances in all competitions for Bruce – he would surely have all the motivation he would need to prove just how great an impact he can make for a big English club.
