Should Unai Emery offer Cesc Fabregas a role in his Arsenal revolution?
Arsenal offered the Premier League a glimpse into their enormous potential under Unai Emery by beating North London rivals Tottenham 4-2 on Sunday.
And the Gunners came from behind to do it, as second-half goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira overturned a 2-1 half-time deficit.
But the man at the centre of that second-half blitz, Aaron Ramsey, might not be in North London for too much longer, with the Spanish coach refusing to offer the Welshman – whose contract expires in 2019 – a new deal.
So what about Cesc Fabregas as a replacement?
Fabregas was adored by Gunners fans during an eight-year spell, which ended in 2011 by joining Barcelona, but the Spaniard has never hid his ongoing affection for the club and even hinted in 2014 that he prioritised an Arsenal return over joining Chelsea.
Some Arsenal fans would argue that it’s time to look forward and not a time to re-sign ghosts of the Emirates past, but what if re-signing former players made sense on a footballing and financial level?
Fabregas is out of contract at Chelsea in six months and has barely featured under Maurizio Sarri, managing just three Premier League appearances. Bringing him back wouldn’t cost a fortune and, at 31, he still has a lot left in the tank.
Would Chelsea sell to a rival for Champions League qualification? It isn’t ideal, but it’s better to sell to Arsenal than lose a player of that quality, age and experience for free six months down the line.
Emery is clearly building something exciting in North London and if Ramsey doesn’t want any part in it, Fabregas would.
