Everton are said to be back in talks with the former Sunderland and West Ham United boss.
According to the BBC, Sam Allardyce is now the leading candidate to take over at Everton despite the Toffees failing to appoint the former England boss weeks ago.
The 63-year-old withdrew from the race to replace Ronald Koeman when the Everton board failed to make him an offer despite early talks, with the suggestion being that the Toffees wanted a higher profile name to lead the club away from the drop zone.
However, despite the great and the good being linked with a move to Goodison Park, including Diego Simeone on a particularly slow news day, Everton are still without a permanent boss, with caretaker manager David Unsworth struggling to have any positive impact in the last few weeks.
The issue for Allardyce is that, if he does agree to join Everton, he will know he was well down the list of potential candidates, and any appointment could be short-term at best.
Everton’s board clearly want a better calibre of manager and, while they cannot attract them to Merseyside right now, any upturn in form under Allardyce could in turn prompt major shareholder Farhad Moshiri to reconsider his options at the end of the campaign.
Allardyce may want the Everton job, but on this occasion perhaps he would be wise to steer clear knowing that he is not really wanted at all.
