Nottingham Forest are reportedly hoping to sign Spanish right-back Angel Rangel from Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers.
Nottingham Forest might have missed out on signing Angel Rangel during the summer but don’t rule out the veteran right-back arriving at the City Ground in 2019.
Rangel moved to Queens Park Rangers instead after his long spell at Swansea City came to an end and, as it stands, his contract at Loftus Road is only due to run until January, though Football London reports that Steven McClaren’s side have the option to extend the deal.
But with the Mirror (17 November, page 63) reporting that Nottingham Forest are planning to make another move for Rangel in January, it remains to be seen where the 36-year-old will be playing his football when 2019 rolls around.
Now, Forest fans might not be too thrilled about the potential addition of a defender who is closer to 40 than 30. Age, however, is just a number and Rangel has proven at QPR that he still has the body and the mind of a footballer capable of standing out at Championship level.
With Sam Byram out injured for the foreseeable future and Saidy Janko’s impressive start at the City Ground giving way to a torrid run of form, Rangel might just be a welcome addition to Forest’s back-line. And that is without mentioning the Spaniard’s experience.
The former Girona man has history when it comes to succeeding in the Championship, having earned promotion with Swansea City at Wembley in 2011. Rangel is a leader too, having captained the South Wales side after Leon Britton stepped down to become the club’s assistant manager.
With Forest hoping to end their long Premier League exile in 2019, signing Rangel would only improve them on and off the pitch.
