Everton fans have taken to Twitter to hammer the Toffees for their club statement, after Lucas Digne joined Aston Villa.

What’s the story?

Well, the Everton fans are furious after Digne joined Aston Villa, but not because they’ve lost a top player.

Instead, the Goodison Park faithful are disgusted at their club’s lack of appreciation for the Frenchman’s efforts.

Everton’s statement simply mentions that Digne has made 15 appearances this season, as well as the fact he used to play for Lille, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

If anything, it reads more like the left-back’s Wikipedia profile.

Whatever happened between Rafa Benitez and Digne, the Toffees should show more respect to a player who has worn the armband for them.

That is not just our opinion, but clearly the belief of many Everton fans who are clearly siding with the left-back instead of Benitez, unsurprisingly.

Could Everton benefit from Lucas Digne joining Aston Villa?

Things look pretty bleak right now, although Everton could actually be better off come the end of January.

The signing of Vitaliy Mykolenko was an encouraging one, and his display against Hull in the FA Cup offered hope that he can replace Digne adequately.

Anwar El Ghazi is also close to arriving on loan, a player who clearly has ability having scored ten Premier League goals last season.

Everton need more depth on the flanks, and it’s possible that a move for El Ghazi wouldn’t have come about had Digne not moved to Villa Park.

Of course, only time will tell, but there are certainly green shoots emerging from the rubble that Digne’s exit has caused.

For now, let’s see what the Everton fans on Twitter have been saying about the club’s statement
