Former Celtic star John Hartson was highly critical of Glasgow Rangers’ display in the Old Firm Derby on Sunday, when speaking exclusively to the Scotsman, labelling the Gers’ performance as ‘shocking’ and ’embarrassing’.

Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops side were quite simply just too good for Graeme Murty’s men in the Scottish Cup semi-final clash, but it was the manner in which Rangers capitulated and failed to show any fight that was the most disappointing aspect of their display.

The gulf between the Glasgow giants is currently a huge one, with Celtic leading Rangers by 13 points in the Scottish Premiership table, with just five league games remaining this season.

Murty’s side had a great chance to prevent their bitter rivals from winning back-to-back trebles on Sunday, but they fluffed their lines badly, and Hartson, who scored 109 goals for the Hoops, did not hold back in his criticism of the Light Blues, as quoted by the Scotsman:

“Their performance showed that; they were battered and could have lost by seven or eight,” he said. “It was embarrassing. They showed no desire, they didn’t get close to them, they didn’t even close down; it was as if they were in awe [of Celtic]. They were just sitting back. You’re sitting back and going: ‘Is this a testimonial?’ Celtic were bumping it to each other and no-one laid a glove on Scott Brown. It was just shocking. The Rangers players need to go away and look at themselves because they play for a big club.”

Rangers will be looking to respond when they host Hearts at Ibrox on Sunday, and if they are to have any chance of winning the game, they will need to show far more than what they did against Celtic at the weekend.
