Paul Merson has written in SportsKeeda that he is shocked that Arsenal central defender Ben White did not play for England in the latest UEFA Nations League games.

The former Arsenal star cannot believe that Gunners ace was not included by England head coach Gareth Southgate for the games against Italy and Germany during the international break.

Paul Merson on Arsenal and England’s Ben White

Mersoo wrote: “I was quite shocked that Ben White didn’t make it to the England squad.

“He can play in three different positions, and that could help Gareth Southgate.

“When White plays at right-back for Arsenal, it allows Tierney to bomb forward and they effectively play with a back three.

“It has worked well for Mikel Arteta so far, and there’s no reason to change that.”

Worrying for Ben White?

In our view, Arsenal star Ben White could be left out of the England squad for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

Now, we know how good the £120,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender is.

However, the former Leeds United loanee has been playing as a right-back this season.

Gabriel and William Saliba have established themselves as the main centre-back pairing at Arsenal, and manager Mikel Arteta is playing White as a right-back.

England have more than enough quality right-backs, and we think that if White does not play in central defence for the Gunners in the coming weeks, then it is unlikely that he will play for the Three Lions in Qatar.
