Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has admitted to the London Evening Standard that he criticises Mesut Ozil to keep him at his best.

The German midfielder has enjoyed a super start to the season, helping the Gunners to second place in the table.

Wednesday evening saw the summer signing starring in the Champions League as he bagged a hat-trick in the 6-0 win over Ludogorets.

Those goals took him to six in all competitions this season, just two short of the tally he managed in the entirety of last year.

His form has earned him widespread praise but Mustafi admits he attempts to keep his compatriot grounded as much as possible.

“Sometimes I have to criticise him as well because that’s how football is,” he told the London Evening Standard.

“But he’s a fantastic player. I’m happy for him. He can make things happen in the final third. He sees runners.”

It will now be interesting to discover if Ozil can keep up his current fine goalscoring form for the remainder of the season.

He has often been criticised for not scoring enough goals, with many having felt he contributed to little considering the advanced position he enjoys in the team.

So far this season he has answered such complaints with his goals and if he can continue in that vein of form then he may finally join the elite level of players.
