Newcastle United have been linked with Sheyi Ojo, who showed what he could have to offer the Magpies in a superb international display on Thursday.

England reached the final of the U20 World Cup on Thursday with a victory over Italy that was shaped by a stunning subtitute performance from Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo.

The 19-year-old winger was called from the bench with the Three Lions trailing to an early strike and quickly made an impact with a hand in two goals as England – inspired by his devastating display – fought back to win 3-1.

Ojo endured a frustrating 2016-17 campaign, missing the first part of the season with injury and then appearing only twice for the Reds, but Newcastle United have been tracking his progress, according to the Chronicle.

While Ojo would be unlikely to command a starting place at St James’ Park right away, his performance against Italy showcased the sort of talents Rafa Benitez would be interested in.

His introduction and subsequent direct running, complemented by crosses off either foot, gave England a different option and Newcastle, back in the Premier League, will similarly need to find alternative routes to goal on occasion.

Matt Ritchie looks certain to start the new season on the right flank for Benitez, but his skillset contrasts Ojo’s so vastly that the former Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee would provide a suitable impact from the bench.

Ojo could be a fine addition to the Newcastle squad – even on loan – and the player would certainly benefit from regular matchday involvement.
